Tsunami alert from Haiti quake

Although originally it was believed that no significant tsunami was triggered, the US Tsunami Warning System now issued a tsunami warning for some coasts of Haiti where waves of 1-3 m could occur along coasts near the epicenter.

Already now it is clear that there is extensive damage, many injuries, and unfortunately fatalities from the quake, based on early reports in social and local media. A clear picture will take time to emerge.

Today's quake sadly reminds of the deadly magnitude 7.0 quake that hit Haiti on 12 January 2010, which claimed between 220,000 and 300,000 people's lives and injured hundreds of thousands more. We all hope that the outcome this time is much less severe.
