Moderate magnitude 4.1 quake hits 26 miles northeast of McAlester, Oklahoma, United States in the morning4.1 quake 24 Aug 10:23 am (GMT -5) An earthquake of magnitude 4.1 occurred only 9 minutes ago 26 miles northeast of McAlester, Oklahoma, United States, the United States Geological Survey reported. The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 3.1 miles beneath the epicenter near McAlester, Pittsburg County, Oklahoma, USA, in the morning on Tuesday 24 August 2021 at 10:23 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 3.8 earthquake. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Quinton (pop. 1000) located 1 miles from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Wilburton (pop. 2,700) located 13 miles from the epicenter, and Stigler (pop. 2,800) 17 miles away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include McAlester (pop. 18,300) located 26 miles from the epicenter, Muskogee (pop. 38,500) 44 miles away, Fort Smith (pop. 88,200) 58 miles away, Tahlequah (pop. 16,600) 60 miles away, and Van Buren (pop. 23,100) 62 miles away.
