Webmaster Launch Director Joined: Feb 2001 Posts: 678,977 Los Angeles, USA	Moderate 4.4 quake hits near Los Mochis, Ahome, Sinaloa, Mexico 4.4 quake 24 Aug 4:46 am (GMT -7) A very shallow magnitude 4.4 earthquake was reported early morning near Los Mochis, Ahome, Sinaloa, Mexico. According to Mexico's National Seismological Service (SSN), the quake hit on Tuesday 24 August 2021 at 4:46 am local time at a very shallow depth of 5 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.4 as well. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Topolobampo (pop. 6,400) located 39 km from the epicenter, and Bachomobampo Numero Dos (pop. 1,400) 46 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Los Mochis (pop. 256,600) located 59 km from the epicenter, Mochis (pop. 2,900) 59 km away, Ahome (pop. 11,300) 64 km away, Juan Jose Rios (pop. 23,600) 67 km away, Higuera de Zaragoza (pop. 9,600) 68 km away, Leyva Solano (pop. 27,500) 77 km away, and Guasave (pop. 71,200) 90 km away.
