Small tremor of magnitude 3.1 just reported 22 miles northeast of Mount Vernon, Washington, United States3.1 quake 28 Aug 2:59 pm (GMT -7) A magnitude 3.1 earthquake near Mount Vernon, Skagit County, Washington, USA, was reported only 10 minutes ago by the United States Geological Survey, considered the key international and national agency that monitors seismic activity in the US. The earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth of 0.4 miles beneath the epicenter early afternoon on Saturday 28 August 2021 at 2:59 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 3.1 earthquake as well. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Hamilton (pop. 300) located 7 miles from the epicenter, and Sedro Woolley (pop. 10,800) 15 miles away. In Mount Vernon (pop. 34,100, 22 miles away), Bellingham (pop. 85,100, 26 miles away), Arlington (pop. 18,900, 30 miles away), Anacortes (pop. 16,400, 31 miles away), and Everett (pop. 108,000, 46 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
