Very strong 7.0 quake hits near Acapulco de Juarez, Acapulco de Juárez, Guerrero, Mexico 7.0 quake 7 Sep 8:47 pm (GMT -5) A shallow magnitude 7.0 earthquake was reported in the evening near Acapulco de Juarez, Acapulco de Juárez, Guerrero, Mexico. According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Tuesday, September 7th, 2021, at 8:47 pm local time at a shallow depth of 12.6 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) which listed the quake at magnitude 7.2. Other agencies reporting the same quake include Geoscience Australia (GeoAu) at magnitude 7.1, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 7.0, and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 6.9. If the preliminary data about magnitude and depth are correct, the quake was extremely dangerous. It has the potential to cause catastrophic impacts on people and infrastructure, probably involving severe and wide-spread damage, especially in areas near the epicenter. Towns or cities where the quake likely caused very strong ground shaking include Towns or cities where the quake likely caused strong ground shaking include Moderate shaking probably occurred in Chilpancingo (pop. 187,300) located 73 km from the epicenter, Ayutla de los Libres (pop. 15,400) 74 km away, Atoyac de Alvarez (pop. 21,400) 74 km away, Tixtla de Guerrero (pop. 22,800) 80 km away, Zumpango del Rio (pop. 24,700) 83 km away, and Chilapa de Alvarez (pop. 31,200) 97 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
