Moderate magnitude 4.2 quake hits 49 km southwest of Argostoli, Greece around noon 4.2 quake 14 Sep 1:40 pm (GMT +3) An earthquake of magnitude 4.2 occurred only 13 minutes ago 49 km southwest of Argostoli, Greece, the National Observatory of Athens (NOA) reported. The quake hit at a shallow depth of 11 km beneath the epicenter near Argostoli, Kefallonia, Ionian Islands, Greece, around noon on Tuesday, September 14th, 2021, at 1:40 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.1. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.4. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Anafonitria (pop. 250) located 31 km from the epicenter, and Katastari (pop. 1,400) 39 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Mouzaki (pop. 1,700) located 45 km from the epicenter, Argostoli (pop. 9,800) 49 km away, Lixouri (pop. 3,800) 50 km away, Zakynthos (pop. 11,500) 51 km away, Amaliada (pop. 16,800) 91 km away, and Pyrgos (pop. 22,400) 99 km away.
