Significant 5.8 quake hits near Heraklion, Crete, Greece 5.8 quake 27 Sep 9:17 am (GMT +3) A shallow magnitude 5.8 earthquake was reported in the morning near Heraklion, Crete, Greece. According to the National Observatory of Athens (NOA), the quake hit on Monday, September 27th, 2021, at 9:17 am local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.8 as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 6.5. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been felt by everybody in the area of the epicenter. In those areas, dangerous ground shaking occurred with the potential to inflict moderate to heavy damage to buildings and other infrastructure. Towns or cities where the quake likely caused strong ground shaking include Moderate shaking probably occurred in Thrapsanon (pop. 1,500) located 7 km from the epicenter, Heraklion (pop. 137,200) 25 km away, Néa Alikarnassos (pop. 12,900) 26 km away, and Gazi (pop. 12,600) 29 km away. In Agios Nikolaos (pop. 11,400) located 42 km from the epicenter, Ierapetra (pop. 12,400) 45 km away, and Rethymnon (pop. 32,500) 76 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
