Magnitude 4.2 earthquake strikes near Huixtla, Chiapas, Mexico 4.2 quake 6 Oct 7:22 pm (GMT -6) A magnitude 4.2 earthquake near Huixtla, Chiapas, Mexico, was reported only 22 minutes ago by Mexico's National Seismological Service (SSN), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in Mexico. The earthquake occurred at a moderately shallow depth of 59 km beneath the epicenter early evening on Wednesday, October 6th, 2021, at 7:22 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.2 earthquake as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include San José el Hueyate (Barra de San José) (pop. 760) located 38 km from the epicenter, Buenos Aires (pop. 4,300) 48 km away, Puerto Madero (pop. 9,600) 49 km away, Mazatlan (pop. 6,800) 50 km away, Vida Mejor I (pop. 6,500) 64 km away, Huehuetan (pop. 7,800) 65 km away, Huixtla (pop. 32,000) 68 km away, Villa Comaltitlan (pop. 7,200) 68 km away, and Tapachula (pop. 202,700) 71 km away.
