Small tremor of magnitude 3.1 just reported 22 miles southwest of Oxnard, California, United States 3.1 quake 12 Oct 12:50 pm (GMT -7) A very shallow magnitude 3.1 earthquake was reported around noon near Oxnard, Ventura County, California, USA.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Tuesday, October 12th, 2021, at 12:50 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 4.7 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 3.1 earthquake as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Channel Islands Beach (pop. 3,100) located 19 miles from the epicenter, and Port Hueneme (pop. 22,400) 19 miles away. In Oxnard (pop. 207,300, 22 miles away), Ventura (pop. 96,800, 26 miles away), Camarillo (pop. 67,600, 28 miles away), Thousand Oaks (pop. 129,300, 34 miles away), Santa Barbara (pop. 91,800, 41 miles away), and Simi Valley (pop. 126,800, 41 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
