Moderate magnitude 4.4 quake hits 13 km southeast of Los Llanos de Aridane, Spain in the evening4.4 quake 28 Oct 9:20 pm (GMT +1) A magnitude 4.4 earthquake near Los Llanos de Aridane, La Palma Island, Canary Islands, Spain, was reported only 6 minutes ago by Spain's Instituto Geográfico Nacional (IGN), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in this part of the world. The earthquake occurred at a moderately shallow depth of 44 km beneath the epicenter in the evening on Thursday, October 28th, 2021, at 9:20 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.4 as well. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Mazo (pop. 4,800) located 5 km from the epicenter, Breña Baja (pop. 4,200) 6 km away, Brena Alta (pop. 7,100) 9 km away, El Paso (pop. 7,100) 10 km away, Santa Cruz de La Palma (pop. 17,100) 13 km away, Los Llanos de Aridane (pop. 20,800) 13 km away, Tazacorte (pop. 5,700) 13 km away, and Garachico (pop. 6,000) 23 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
