Significant 5.3 quake hits near Cañete, Arauco, Region del Biobio, Chile 5.3 quake 1 Dec 1:39 am (GMT -3) An earthquake of magnitude 5.3 occurred only 12 minutes ago 13 km southwest of Cañete, Chile, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter near Cañete, Arauco, Region del Biobio, Chile, early morning on Wednesday, December 1st, 2021, at 1:39 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 5.4 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Cañete (pop. 20,200) located 13 km from the epicenter.
In Puerto Lebu (pop. 22,300) located 30 km from the epicenter, and Curanilahue (pop. 30,600) 45 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Arauco (pop. 24,700) located 71 km from the epicenter, Angol (pop. 44,900) 71 km away, Lota (pop. 49,800) 91 km away, Coronel (pop. 92,900) 98 km away, Concepcion (pop. 215,400) 122 km away, and Talcahuano (pop. 253,000) 131 km away.
