Moderate 4.4 quake hits near Mito, Mito-shi, Ibaraki, Japan 4.4 quake 28 Dec 4:08 am (GMT +9) An earthquake of magnitude 4.4 occurred early morning on Tuesday, December 28th, 2021, at 4:08 am local time near Mito, Mito-shi, Ibaraki, Japan, as reported by the United States Geological Survey. According to preliminary data, the quake was located at an intermediate depth of 70.4 km. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data. Our monitoring service identified a second report from Japan's National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.8. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.4. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Inashiki (pop. 47,000) located 14 km from the epicenter, Ishioka (pop. 52,300) 14 km away, Ami (pop. 48,300) 14 km away, Naka (pop. 46,800) 17 km away, Ushiku (pop. 80,000) 23 km away, Ryūgasaki (pop. 85,800) 25 km away, Tsukuba (pop. 175,600) 26 km away, Mito (pop. 246,500) 32 km away, Tokyo (pop. 8,336,600) 73 km away, and Kawasaki (pop. 1,306,800) 84 km away.
