Small magnitude 3.4 quake hits 6 miles southwest of Muswellbrook, Australia early morning 3.4 quake 28 Dec 3:34 am (GMT +11) A very shallow magnitude 3.4 earthquake was reported early morning near Muswellbrook, New South Wales, Australia. According to Geoscience Australia (GeoAu), the quake hit on Tuesday, December 28th, 2021, at 3:34 am local time at a very shallow depth of 2.4 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.4 as well. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Muswellbrook (pop. 12,100) located 6 miles from the epicenter. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Denman (pop. 1,800) located 10 miles from the epicenter, Aberdeen (pop. 2,000) 13 miles away, and Singleton Heights (pop. 4,600) 22 miles away. In Cessnock (pop. 15,100, 44 miles away), Maitland (pop. 67,100, 49 miles away), Heddon Greta (pop. 2,000, 49 miles away), and Morpeth (pop. 1,400, 53 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
