Significant 5.2 quake hits near Tbilisi, K'alak'i T'bilisi, Georgia 5.2 quake 13 Feb 10:25 pm (GMT +4) An earthquake of magnitude 5.2 occurred late at night on Sunday, February 13th, 2022, at 10:25 pm local time near Tbilisi, K'alak'i T'bilisi, Georgia, as reported by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ). According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.2 as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the Kandilli Oservatory and Earthquake Research Institute in Istanbul (KOERI-RETMC) at magnitude 5.6, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.3. Generally quakes of this magnitude are recorded by more than one agency and the results can vary, with subsequent reports that come in after the first one often showing more accuracy. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Bediani (pop. 230) located 34 km from the epicenter, Step'anavan (pop. 23,800) 35 km away, and Luxemburg (pop. 13,800) 41 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Marneuli (pop. 18,800) located 63 km from the epicenter, Tbilisi (pop. 1,049,500) 77 km away, Rustavi (pop. 50,000) 80 km away, Gori (pop. 46,700) 82 km away, Hasuri (pop. 27,800) 93 km away, and Yerevan (pop. 1,093,500) 123 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
