Moderate magnitude 4.2 earthquake 48 km northwest of Athens, Greece 4.2 quake 10 Apr 5:12 am (GMT +3) A magnitude 4.2 earthquake near Athens, Nomarchía Athínas, Attica, Greece, was reported only 12 minutes ago by the National Observatory of Athens (NOA), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in Greece. The earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth of 5 km beneath the epicenter early morning on Sunday, April 10th, 2022, at 5:12 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.3. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.7, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 4.2. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Kallithea (pop. 700) located 5 km from the epicenter, and Thebes (pop. 22,000) 6 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Chalcis (pop. 59,100) located 25 km from the epicenter, Acharnes (pop. 99,300) 40 km away, Petroúpolis (pop. 59,000) 41 km away, and Peristeri (pop. 140,000) 43 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Nikaia (pop. 89,400) located 46 km from the epicenter, Piraeus (pop. 163,700) 48 km away, Athens (pop. 664,000) 48 km away, and Kallithea (pop. 100,600) 50 km away.
