Significant magnitude 5.0 quake hits 46 km southwest of Ashkāsham, Afghanistan in the afternoon
5.0 quake 17 Jun 4:55 pm (GMT +4:30)

Afghanistan was shaken near Ashkāsham, Ishkāshim, Badakhshan, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.0 only 17 minutes ago, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported.
The quake hit at an intermediate depth of 90 km beneath the epicenter near Ashkāsham, Ishkāshim, Badakhshan, Afghanistan, in the afternoon on Friday, June 17th, 2022, at 4:25 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 5.0 earthquake as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) at magnitude 5.1, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.6.
Generally quakes of this magnitude are recorded by more than one agency and the results can vary, with subsequent reports that come in after the first one often showing more accuracy.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Ashkāsham (pop. 12,100) located 46 km from the epicenter, Ishqoshim (pop. 26,000) 54 km away, and Jurm (pop. 12,100) 73 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Faizabad (pop. 44,400) located 109 km from the epicenter, and Faizabad (pop. 44,400) 109 km away.
