Moderate 4.5 quake hits near Nicoya, Provincia de Guanacaste, Costa Rica4.5 quake 28 Jul 7:05 pm (GMT -6) An earthquake of magnitude 4.5 occurred only 24 minutes ago 56 km west of Nicoya, Costa Rica, the United States Geological Survey reported. The quake hit at a moderately shallow depth of 35 km beneath the epicenter near Nicoya, Provincia de Guanacaste, Costa Rica, early evening on Thursday, July 28th, 2022, at 7:05 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 4.5 earthquake as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 3.2, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 4.5. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Santa Cruz (pop. 12,300) located 40 km from the epicenter, Belen (pop. 2,700) 44 km away, and Sardinal (pop. 3,300) 45 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Nicoya (pop. 15,300) located 56 km from the epicenter, Hojancha (pop. 1,800) 62 km away, and Canas (pop. 20,300) 96 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
