Moderate magnitude 4.1 earthquake 16 miles northeast of Burns, Oregon, United States 4.1 quake 27 Jul 8:30 pm (GMT -7) An earthquake of magnitude 4.1 occurred in the evening on Wednesday, July 27th, 2022, at 8:30 pm local time near Burns, Harney County, Oregon, USA, as reported by the United States Geological Survey. According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 5 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 4.1 as well. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Burns (pop. 2,800) located 16 miles from the epicenter. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include John Day (pop. 1,700) located 48 miles from the epicenter.
