An earthquake of magnitude 4.0 occurred only 18 minutes ago 3 miles east of Covelo, California, United States, the United States Geological Survey reported.
The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 5.3 miles beneath the epicenter near Covelo, Mendocino County, California, USA, in the morning on Tuesday, September 20th, 2022, at 7:03 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 4.0 as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 4.0, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 3.9.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Covelo (pop. 1,300) located 3 miles from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Laytonville (pop. 1,200) located 17 miles from the epicenter.
