Moderate 4.5 quake hits near Fethiye, Muğla, Turkey

A shallow magnitude 4.5 earthquake was reported around noon near Fethiye, Muğla, Turkey.
According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the quake hit on Sunday, October 2nd, 2022, at 1:58 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the Kandilli Oservatory and Earthquake Research Institute in Istanbul (KOERI-RETMC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.5 earthquake as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the National Observatory of Athens (NOA) at magnitude 4.3, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.5, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 4.5.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Gocek (pop. 4,500) located 27 km from the epicenter, Ortaca (pop. 19,700) 28 km away, Dalaman (pop. 19,300) 32 km away, Fethiye (pop. 60,400) 40 km away, Sarigerme (pop. 16,000) 41 km away, and Mugla (pop. 48,200) 63 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Marmaris (pop. 33,700) located 68 km from the epicenter, Serinhisar (pop. 17,200) 69 km away, and Denizli (pop. 313,200) 87 km away.
