Significant magnitude 5.2 earthquake 37 km southeast of Tobelo, Indonesia

A magnitude 5.2 earthquake near Tobelo, Kabupaten Halmahera Utara, North Maluku, Indonesia, was reported only 18 minutes ago by Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency, considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in Indonesia. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 28 km beneath the epicenter in the morning on Sunday, October 2nd, 2022, at 10:35 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.0. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.8, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 4.8.
Generally quakes of this magnitude are recorded by more than one agency and the results can vary, with subsequent reports that come in after the first one often showing more accuracy.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Tobelo (pop. 10,000) located 37 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Sofifi (pop. 36,200) located 126 km from the epicenter.
