Moderate earthquake of magnitude 4.0 just reported 36 miles southwest of Hilo, Hawaii, United States 4.0 quake 27 Nov 11:51 pm (GMT -10) An earthquake of magnitude 4.0 occurred only 11 minutes ago 36 miles southwest of Hilo, Hawaii, United States, the United States Geological Survey reported. The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 1.9 miles beneath the epicenter near Hilo, Hawaii County, Hawaii, USA, late at night on Sunday, November 27th, 2022, at 11:51 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.0 as well. A third agency, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, reported the same quake at magnitude 4.0. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Honaunau-Napoopoo (pop. 2,600) located 19 miles from the epicenter. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Captain Cook (pop. 3,400) located 22 miles from the epicenter, Volcano Village (pop. 2,600) 23 miles away, Honalo (pop. 2,400) 23 miles away, Holualoa (pop. 8,500) 26 miles away, Kailua-Kona (pop. 12,000) 29 miles away, Hawaiian Ocean View (pop. 4,400) 31 miles away, Kalaoa (pop. 9,600) 31 miles away, and Hilo (pop. 43,300) 36 miles away.
