Significant magnitude 5.6 earthquake 77 km northeast of Esmeraldas, Ecuador5.6 quake 17 Dec 4:46 am (GMT -5) A magnitude 5.6 earthquake near Esmeraldas, Cantón Esmeraldas, Ecuador, was reported only 8 minutes ago by the Institute of Geophysics of the National Polytechnic School in Quito (IGEPN), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in this part of the world. The earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth of 5 km beneath the epicenter early morning on Saturday, December 17th, 2022, at 4:46 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), which listed it as a magnitude 5.2 earthquake. A third agency, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, reported the same quake at magnitude 5.3. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Valdez (pop. 11,400) located 64 km from the epicenter, Pampanal de Bolivar (pop. 1,100) 66 km away, Tumaco (pop. 86,700) 74 km away, San Lorenzo de Esmeraldas (pop. 20,200) 75 km away, and Esmeraldas (pop. 165,200) 77 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
