Webmaster Launch Director Joined: Feb 2001 Posts: 678,977 Los Angeles, USA	Magnitude 4.8 earthquake strikes near Puerto Padre, Las Tunas, Cuba 4.8 quake 17 Dec 1:40 am (GMT -5) A magnitude 4.8 earthquake near Puerto Padre, Las Tunas, Cuba, was reported 37 minutes ago by the United States Geological Survey, considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter early morning on Saturday, December 17th, 2022, at 1:40 am local time. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data. A second report was later issued by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), which listed it as a magnitude 4.6 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.8, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 4.8. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Puerto Padre (pop. 76,800) located 70 km from the epicenter, Manati (pop. 13,300) 72 km away, Jesus Menéndez (pop. 51,000) 73 km away, Nuevitas (pop. 54,000) 84 km away, and Gibara (pop. 27,600) 88 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Victoria (pop. 203,700) located 106 km from the epicenter, and Holguin (pop. 319,100) 106 km away.
