Magnitude 5.1 earthquake strikes near mandare, Mandalay District, Mandalay Region, Myanmar (Burma)5.1 quake 16 Dec 2:28 pm (GMT +6:30) A magnitude 5.1 earthquake near mandare, Mandalay District, Mandalay Region, Myanmar (Burma), was reported only 14 minutes ago by Thailand's Earthquake Observation Division (TMD), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in this part of the world. The earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth of 5 km beneath the epicenter around noon on Friday, December 16th, 2022, at 1:58 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In mandare (pop. 1,208,100) located 14 km from the epicenter, and Sitkaing (pop. 78,700) 24 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Pyin Oo Lwin (pop. 117,300) located 45 km from the epicenter, Kyaukse (pop. 50,500) 55 km away, Shwebo (pop. 88,900) 63 km away, Monywa (pop. 182,000) 91 km away, Myingyan (pop. 141,700) 96 km away, and Mogok (pop. 90,800) 105 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
