Small earthquake of magnitude 3.9 just reported 31 km northeast of Nijar, Spain 3.9 quake 31 Dec 8:05 am (GMT +1) Just 12 minutes ago, a 3.9-magnitude earthquake struck near Nijar, Almería, Andalusia, Spain. The tremor was recorded in the morning on Saturday, December 31st, 2022, at 8:05 am local time, at a very shallow depth of 5 km below the surface. The event was filed by Spain's Instituto Geográfico Nacional (IGN), the first seismological agency to report it. A second report was later issued by the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera, IPMA), which listed it as a magnitude 3.9 earthquake as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 3.9, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 3.9. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Carboneras (pop. 7,200) located 4 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Mojacar (pop. 5,200) located 13 km from the epicenter, Garrucha (pop. 6,900) 18 km away, and Vera (pop. 14,000) 24 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Cuevas del Almanzora (pop. 13,000) located 30 km from the epicenter, Nijar (pop. 26,500) 31 km away, Huercal Overa (pop. 17,600) 41 km away, and Aguilas (pop. 34,500) 49 km away.
