An earthquake of magnitude 5.0 occurred in the morning on Friday, December 30th, 2022, at 9:35 am local time near Matamoros, Coalcomán de Vázquez Pallares, Michoacan, Mexico, as reported by Mexico's National Seismological Service (SSN).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
A second report was later issued by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), which listed it as a magnitude 4.9 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.9, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.0.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Chocola (pop. 71) located 4 km from the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Aquila (pop. 1,700) located 50 km from the epicenter, La Placita de Morelos (pop. 1,400) 51 km away, Matamoros (pop. 10,800) 58 km away, Aguililla (pop. 8,800) 69 km away, La Loma (pop. 7,300) 69 km away, Cerro de Ortega (pop. 7,600) 77 km away, and Arteaga (pop. 10,500) 97 km away.
