Magnitude 4.4 earthquake strikes near Ras Gharib, Mar Rojo, Egypt

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a magnitude 4.4 quake in Egypt near Ras Gharib, Mar Rojo, only 29 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the afternoon on Thursday, December 29th, 2022, at 4:54 pm local time at a shallow depth of 15 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 4.4 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in El-Tor (pop. 15,000) located 32 km from the epicenter, and Ras Gharib (pop. 32,000) 50 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include El Gouna (pop. 15,000) located 74 km from the epicenter, Saint Catherine (pop. 4,600) 80 km away, Sharm el Sheikh (pop. 12,000) 90 km away, and Hurghada (pop. 95,600) 93 km away.
