Moderate yet deep magnitude 5.0 quake hits 29 km east of Lata, Solomon Islands early evening

Solomon Islands was shaken near Lata, Santa Cruz Islands, Temotu Province, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.0 only 24 minutes ago, the United States Geological Survey reported.
The quake hit at an intermediate to considerable depth of 172.1 km beneath the epicenter near Lata, Santa Cruz Islands, Temotu Province, Solomon Islands, early evening on Tuesday, January 10th, 2023, at 7:21 pm local time. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
