The earthquake hit late at night on Thursday, January 19th, 2023, at 11:01 pm local time at an intermediate depth of 120.9 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), which listed it as a magnitude 4.9 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.0, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.0. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Yigo Village (pop. 20,500) located 32 km from the epicenter, Dededo Village (pop. 44,900) 38 km away, Hagåtña Village (pop. 1,100) 47 km away, Agaña (pop. 1,100) 48 km away, and Talofofo Village (pop. 3,200) 57 km away.
