Significant 5.1 quake hits near Assad-Abad, Asadābād, Kunar, Afghanistan 5.1 quake 19 Jan 4:00 pm (GMT +4:30) An earthquake of magnitude 5.1 occurred only 23 minutes ago 78 km northeast of Assad-Abad, Afghanistan, the United States Geological Survey reported. The quake hit at an intermediate depth of 96 km beneath the epicenter near Assad-Abad, Asadābād, Kunar, Afghanistan, early afternoon on Thursday, January 19th, 2023, at 3:30 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from India's National Center for Seismology (NCS) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.3. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.2, France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) at magnitude 5.3, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.1, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.1. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Pārūn (pop. 1000) located 47 km from the epicenter, Dīr (pop. 29,900) 55 km away, Āsmār (pop. 15,700) 57 km away, Thal (pop. 29,300) 75 km away, and Assad-Abad (pop. 48,400) 78 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Mingora (pop. 279,900) located 120 km from the epicenter. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
