Significant earthquake of magnitude 5.6 just reported 8 km southeast of Khvoy, Iran
5.6 quake 18 Jan 1:38 pm (GMT +3:30)

An earthquake of magnitude 5.6 occurred around noon on Wednesday, January 18th, 2023, at 1:08 pm local time near Khvoy, West Azerbaijan, Iran, as reported by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), which listed it as a magnitude 5.7 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) at magnitude 5.4, the Kandilli Oservatory and Earthquake Research Institute in Istanbul (KOERI-RETMC) at magnitude 5.9, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.6, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.5.
Generally quakes of this magnitude are recorded by more than one agency and the results can vary, with subsequent reports that come in after the first one often showing more accuracy.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Khvoy (pop. 175,400) located 8 km from the epicenter.
In Qarah Ẕīā’ od Dīn (pop. 31,900) located 41 km from the epicenter, Salmas (pop. 81,600) 43 km away, Marand (pop. 124,200) 66 km away, and Nakhichivan (pop. 64,800) 83 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Urmia (pop. 577,300) located 108 km from the epicenter, Urmia (pop. 577,300) 108 km away, and Tabriz (pop. 1,424,600) 121 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available.
