An earthquake of magnitude 3.2 occurred in the morning on Sunday, February 5th, 2023, at 8:23 am local time near Valdivia, Provincia de Valdivia, Los Rios Region, Chile, as reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 5 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 3.2 earthquake as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Santa Rosa (pop. 1000) located 14 km from the epicenter. In Panguipulli (pop. 16,300, 50 km away), Rio Bueno (pop. 15,500, 52 km away), La Union (pop. 26,300, 59 km away), Las Animas (pop. 30,000, 73 km away), Valdivia (pop. 133,400, 75 km away), and Osorno (pop. 135,800, 80 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
