Moderate magnitude 4.0 quake hits 17 km northwest of Hojai, India early afternoon4.0 quake 12 Feb 4:18 pm (GMT +5:30) A magnitude 4.0 earthquake near Hojai, Assam, India, was reported only 18 minutes ago by India's National Center for Seismology (NCS), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in this part of the world. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter early afternoon on Sunday, February 12th, 2023, at 3:48 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 4.0 as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.0. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Hojai (pop. 36,900) located 17 km from the epicenter. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Morigaon (pop. 20,800) located 41 km from the epicenter, Dhing (pop. 20,800) 48 km away, Lumding Railway Colony (pop. 25,300) 60 km away, Tezpur (pop. 58,900) 60 km away, Dhekiajuli (pop. 21,300) 71 km away, Diphu (pop. 57,100) 77 km away, Dispur (pop. 10,800) 92 km away, and Guwahati (pop. 899,100) 98 km away.
