Significant earthquake of magnitude 5.0 just reported 107 km northwest of Iquique, Chile
5.0 quake 18 Feb 5:13 pm (GMT -5)

An earthquake of magnitude 5.0 occurred in the afternoon on Saturday, February 18th, 2023, at 5:13 pm local time near Iquique, Provincia de Iquique, Tarapaca, Chile, as reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 4.9 earthquake. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.9.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Iquique (pop. 227,500) located 107 km from the epicenter, and Alto Hospicio (pop. 105,100) 114 km away.
