Significant earthquake of magnitude 5.0 just reported 23 km east of Douliu, Taiwan 5.0 quake 18 Feb 11:49 pm (GMT +8) A magnitude 5.0 earthquake near Douliu, Yunlin, Taiwan, was reported only 17 minutes ago by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 18 km beneath the epicenter late at night on Saturday, February 18th, 2023, at 11:49 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by the China Earthquake Networks Center (CEIC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.1 earthquake. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Lugu (pop. 19,600) located 5 km from the epicenter, Douliu (pop. 104,700) 23 km away, Nantou City (pop. 105,700) 26 km away, Zhongxing New Village (pop. 25,500) 30 km away, and Yuanlin (pop. 124,700) 35 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Puli (pop. 86,400) located 36 km from the epicenter, Taichung (pop. 1,040,700) 50 km away, and Hualien City (pop. 350,500) 90 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
