Moderate magnitude 4.4 quake hits 24 km west of Puerto Escondido, Mexico after midnight4.4 quake 18 Feb 12:04 am (GMT -6) Just 32 minutes ago, a 4.4-magnitude earthquake struck near Puerto Escondido, San Pedro Mixtepec -Dto. 22 -, Oaxaca, Mexico. The tremor was recorded after midnight on Saturday, February 18th, 2023, at 12:04 am local time, at a very shallow depth of 5 km below the surface. The event was filed by Mexico's National Seismological Service (SSN), the first seismological agency to report it. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the United States Geological Survey which listed the quake at magnitude 4.4 as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.5, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 4.5, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 4.4. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Llano Grande (pop. 350) located 6 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Rio Grande (pop. 12,900) located 19 km from the epicenter, Bajos de Chila (pop. 5,400) 19 km away, Puerto Escondido (pop. 25,900) 24 km away, Santos Reyes Nopala (pop. 5,200) 28 km away, San Gabriel Mixtepec (pop. 3,500) 32 km away, Santiago Yaitepec (pop. 4,100) 36 km away, Santa Catarina Juquila (pop. 6,200) 38 km away, and San Miguel Panixtlahuaca (pop. 5,700) 41 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
