Small magnitude 3.8 earthquake 35 km northeast of Hato Mayor del Rey, Dominican Republic

Just 22 minutes ago, a 3.8-magnitude earthquake struck near Hato Mayor del Rey, Hato Mayor, Provincia de Hato Mayor, Dominican Republic. The tremor was recorded in the afternoon on Thursday, February 16th, 2023, at 5:53 pm local time, at a shallow depth of 23 km below the surface.
The event was filed by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 3.8 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Miches (pop. 9,300) located 11 km from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Sabana de la Mar (pop. 14,000) located 28 km from the epicenter, El Valle (pop. 5,700) 28 km away, Santa Barbara de Samana (pop. 11,400) 29 km away, and Hato Mayor del Rey (pop. 36,000) 35 km away. In Nagua (pop. 33,900, 85 km away), and Punta Cana (pop. 100,000, 92 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
