An earthquake of magnitude 5.8 occurred in the evening on Monday, February 20th, 2023, at 8:35 pm local time near Kodiak, Kodiak Island, Alaska, USA, as reported by the United States Geological Survey.
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a moderately shallow depth of 29 miles. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.5. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.0.

Weak shaking might have been felt in Kodiak (pop. 6,300) located 67 miles from the epicenter.
