Moderate magnitude 4.7 quake hits 44 km southwest of Ciudad de San Juan, Argentina after midnight 4.7 quake 1 Jul 12:29 am (GMT -3) The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported a magnitude 4.7 quake in Argentina near Ciudad de San Juan, Departamento de Capital, San Juan, only 13 minutes ago. The earthquake hit after midnight on Saturday, July 1st, 2023, at 12:29 am local time at a moderately shallow depth of 46 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 4.7 as well. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Pocito (pop. 41,000) located 28 km from the epicenter, Nueve de Julio (pop. 7,700) 43 km away, Ciudad de San Juan (pop. 447,000) 44 km away, Santa Lucia (pop. 43,600) 46 km away, Villa Paula de Sarmiento (pop. 19,100) 48 km away, Chimbas (pop. 73,800) 49 km away, Caucete (pop. 33,600) 53 km away, and Albardon (pop. 20,400) 54 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Mendoza (pop. 876,900) located 113 km from the epicenter. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
