The earthquake hit early afternoon on Friday, June 30th, 2023, at 2:23 pm local time at a shallow depth of 12 miles. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.1. A third agency, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, reported the same quake at magnitude 3.4. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Pa‘auilo (pop. 600) located 10 miles from the epicenter, Honokaa (pop. 2,300) 14 miles away, Pepeekeo (pop. 1,800) 19 miles away, Waimea (pop. 9,200) 21 miles away, Pāpa‘ikou (pop. 1,300) 21 miles away, Hilo (pop. 43,300) 22 miles away, and Waikoloa (pop. 4,800) 26 miles away. In Mountainview (pop. 3,900, 30 miles away), and Hawaiian Paradise Park (pop. 11,400, 34 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
