Magnitude 4.1 earthquake strikes near Sitia, Lasithi, Crete, Greece 4.1 quake 1 Aug 11:52 pm (GMT +2) An earthquake of magnitude 4.1 occurred late at night on Tuesday, August 1st, 2023, at 11:52 pm local time near Sitia, Lasithi, Crete, Greece, as reported by the National Observatory of Athens (NOA).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 8.6 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from The Seismological Survey of Serbia (SSS) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.4. Other agencies reporting the same quake include Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) at magnitude 4.3, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.2, and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 4.2.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Kalo Nero (pop. 78) located 36 km from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Palekastro (pop. 1,100) located 41 km from the epicenter, Sitia (pop. 8,700) 47 km away, Kentri (pop. 1000) 59 km away, Ierapetra (pop. 12,400) 59 km away, Gra Lygia (pop. 1,500) 64 km away, Nea Anatoli (pop. 1000) 66 km away, Agios Nikolaos (pop. 11,400) 70 km away, and Elounda (pop. 2,200) 75 km away.
