Moderate earthquake of magnitude 4.8 reported 38 km southwest of Bucaramanga, Colombia 4.8 quake 17 Aug 1:16 pm (GMT -5) A magnitude 4.8 earthquake near Bucaramanga, Santander, Colombia, was reported 37 minutes ago by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in this part of the world. The earthquake occurred at an intermediate depth of 144.4 km beneath the epicenter around noon on Thursday, August 17th, 2023, at 1:16 pm local time. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Zapatoca (pop. 6,100) located 8 km from the epicenter, Piedecuesta (pop. 86,400) 27 km away, San Gil (pop. 33,600) 27 km away, Giron (pop. 108,500) 31 km away, Floridablanca (pop. 252,300) 32 km away, Socorro (pop. 17,800) 37 km away, Bucaramanga (pop. 571,800) 38 km away, Malaga (pop. 18,700) 53 km away, and Barrancabermeja (pop. 191,400) 78 km away.
