Small tremor of magnitude 2.8 just reported 5 miles northwest of Vincennes, Illinois, United States

The United States Geological Survey reported a magnitude 2.8 quake in the United States near Vincennes, Knox County, Indiana, only 25 minutes ago. The earthquake hit around noon on Thursday, August 17th, 2023, at 12:25 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 3.1 miles. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 2.8 as well. A third agency, The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), reported the same quake at magnitude 2.8.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Lawrenceville (pop. 4,400) located 4 miles from the epicenter, Vincennes (pop. 18,000) 5 miles away, and Bridgeport (pop. 1,800) 8 miles away. In Robinson (pop. 7,600, 21 miles away), Mount Carmel (pop. 7,000, 22 miles away), Washington (pop. 12,100, 24 miles away), Olney (pop. 9,000, 25 miles away), and Jasper (pop. 15,500, 43 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
