According to India's National Center for Seismology (NCS), the quake hit on Thursday, August 17th, 2023, at 2:06 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Mairang (pop. 12,600) located 30 km from the epicenter, and Nongstoin (pop. 25,800) 33 km away. In Shillong (pop. 132,800, 50 km away), Hājo (pop. 16,000, 54 km away), North Guwāhāti (pop. 17,500, 55 km away), Guwahati (pop. 899,100, 55 km away), Barpeta (pop. 48,800, 75 km away), and Rangia (pop. 26,400, 78 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
