Magnitude 5.7 earthquake strikes near Santo, Luganville, Sanma Province, Vanuatu
5.7 quake 29 Sep 1:40 am (GMT +11)

Vanuatu was shaken near Santo, Luganville, Sanma Province, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.7 only 14 minutes ago, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported.
The quake hit at an intermediate to considerable depth of 162 km beneath the epicenter near Santo, Luganville, Sanma Province, Vanuatu, early morning on Friday, September 29th, 2023, at 1:40 am local time. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 5.7 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Santo (pop. 13,400) located 52 km from the epicenter, Norsup (pop. 3,000) 60 km away, and Port-Olry (pop. 2,000) 85 km away.
