A magnitude 4.0 earthquake near Angra do Heroismo, Angra do Heroísmo Municipality, Azores, Portugal, was reported only 19 minutes ago by the Institue of Volcanology and Risk Mitigation (IVAR), University of the Azores, considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in this part of the world. The earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth of 0 km beneath the epicenter in the afternoon on Monday, September 25th, 2023, at 4:44 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 4.4 earthquake.
