5.2 quake 57 km north of Taitung City, Taiwan, Oct 11, 2023 6:36 pm (GMT +8)

A magnitude 5.2 earthquake near Taitung City, Taiwan, was reported only 17 minutes ago by the United States Geological Survey, considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 17.5 km beneath the epicenter early evening on Wednesday, October 11th, 2023, at 6:36 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the China Earthquake Networks Center (CEIC), which listed it as a magnitude 5.4 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) at magnitude 5.3, and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 4.9.
Generally quakes of this magnitude are recorded by more than one agency and the results can vary, with subsequent reports that come in after the first one often showing more accuracy.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Taitung City (pop. 109,600) located 57 km from the epicenter, Lugu (pop. 19,600) 78 km away, Puli (pop. 86,400) 86 km away, Hualien City (pop. 350,500) 86 km away, Yujing (pop. 16,600) 87 km away, Douliu (pop. 104,700) 92 km away, Nantou City (pop. 105,700) 98 km away, Zhongxing New Village (pop. 25,500) 101 km away, and Kaohsiung City (pop. 1,519,700) 123 km away.
