Moderate yet deep earthquake of magnitude 5.8 just reported 63 km southwest of Abra Pampa, Argentina 5.8 quake 10 Oct 7:01 am (GMT -3) An earthquake of magnitude 5.8 occurred only 11 minutes ago 63 km southwest of Abra Pampa, Argentina, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported. The quake hit at an intermediate to considerable depth of 241 km beneath the epicenter near Abra Pampa, Departamento de Cochinoca, Jujuy, Argentina, in the morning on Tuesday, October 10th, 2023, at 7:01 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by The National Seismological Center (Centro Sismológico Nacional, CSN) of the University of Chile, which listed it as a magnitude 6.0 earthquake. A third agency, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, reported the same quake at magnitude 5.9. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Abra Pampa (pop. 9,400) located 63 km from the epicenter, El Aguilar (pop. 3,700) 67 km away, Humahuaca (pop. 11,400) 98 km away, and Villazon (pop. 30,300) 117 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
