Small tremor of magnitude 3.6 just reported 83 km southwest of Marrakech, Morocco

An earthquake of magnitude 3.6 occurred early evening on Wednesday, October 18th, 2023, at 7:37 pm local time near Marrakech, Marrakesh-Safi, Morocco, as reported by the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera, IPMA).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 11 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 4.2.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Oukaimeden (pop. 4,400) located 55 km from the epicenter. In Setti Fatma (pop. 22,300, 72 km away), Taroudant (pop. 71,100, 73 km away), and Marrakech (pop. 839,300, 83 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
